Popis: Publisher Summary Thermal energy storage (TES) offers a means of effecting significant cost savings and conservation of premium fuels. By providing thermal storage between the heat source and heat user, cost savings can be realized by improved utilization of capital equipment. The use of heat that would otherwise be wasted reduces premium fuel requirements. The chapter describes the technologies based upon four basic TES modes, namely, the sensible heat of solids, the sensible heat of liquids, latent heat of phase change, and chemical heat of reaction, respectively. The selection of a particular TES mode, the basic technology for a given application, and the resultant system performance and economics depends on detailed engineering effort. In some cases, the technologies are in an arrested state of development; in others, they are developing rapidly, and the basic design and operating experience is inadequate. The chapter also discusses the sensible heat storage. Heat storage devices based on sensible heat require special design and operational features to ensure heat extraction within desired temperature limits. The most widely used method is to arrange storage devices in groups of four or five with series/parallel switching on both the charging and discharging cycles.
