Popis: | Objective. Our aim in this study was to determine the incidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in a group of asymptomatic female renal transplant patients. Method. Ninety-two transplant patients who were referred for gynecological assessments and underwent cytological screening and colposcopic assessments were reviewed. DNA hybridization of cervical cells was used to detect the presence of HPV types. Results. Ten percent of patients (9 of 92) had abnormal cytology, with a significant number [6 of 9; 67%] showing high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. Sixty-three percent (19 of 30) were found to be positive for HPV DNA by hybridization analysis. HPV types (16 of 18) were the most prevalent subtypes. Treatment of CIN using standard ablative or excisional techniques had the same success rate in this group of patients as that in the general population. Conclusion. Renal transplant patients are at significant risk of developing CIN that often is high-grade in nature. These patients should be started indefinitely on a yearly cytological monitoring regimen soon after their transplantations. |
