Conventional resistive wall amplifiers using naturally occurring dielectric materials provide wide bandwidth but weak gain 1. We have shown that theory and simulations predict that metamaterial-enhanced resistive wall amplifiers (MERWAs) are candidates for wideband, high gain, and high power microwave amplification2, Implementation of a MERWA requires the use of an epsilon-negative (ENG) liner in a waveguide structure. We have designed proof-of-concept experiments to test the theoretical predictions. This talk will describe recent results of experimental measurements and data analysis to extract and characterize the effective complex permittivity parameters of a metamaterial liner in a rectangular waveguide. The results include examination of the effects of the liner's material composition, its lossiness and its unit cell structural features. |
