The enthalpies of solution of zinc oxide in perchloric and hydrochloric acids, and the standard enthalpy of formation of aqueous zinc ion

Popis: Enthalpies of solution in HCl and HClO4 solutions at 298.15 K were measured for portions of the same batch of ZnO(s) for mole-ratio patterns corresponding to selected studies in the literature. The results enabled determination of the standard enthalpy of solution of ZnO(s) in HClO4 solution and also calculation of ΔHfo(Zn2+, aq, 298.15 K) = −(36640 ± 50) calth mol−1 by a calorimetric route independent of ΔHfo(ZnO, s) and from a route involving Davies and Staveley's measurements on e-Zn(OH)2(s). Standard enthalpies and Gibbs energies of formation were calculated for ZnO(s) and e-Zn(OH)2(s), along with So(Zn2+, aq, 298.15 K) = −(26.14 ± 0.17) calth K−1 mol−1.
