Popis: | The susceptibility to intergranular corrosion of type 304 stainless steel and Alloy 600 has been investigated in aqueous solutions containing SO2. Experimental results indicate that both alloys are very susceptible to this phenomenon after sensitizing heat treatments. The rate of penetration of the intergranular attack appears to be governed by chromium depletion at grain boundaries. In the higher sensitized condition, the intergranular corrosion penetrates the entire thickness of 0.5 mm specimens exposed for a week to a solution 0.1 M SO2 at 40 C. Chloride and H2SO4 additions could be of considerable importance, but SO2 represents the major factor. |
