Popis: | Most observers have argued that the political participation of ethnic minorities in Australia has been small. This paper argues that while this remains valid, some change has occurred since the last major study of the political participation of immigrants was conducted in 1989. This paper focuses in particular on two modes of political participation: (i) the participation of immigrants from NESB in political parties; (ii) the nature and extent of particularised contact between immigrants from NESB and their elected representatives. With respect to the latter form of participation, it shows how it has increased since the 1970s, as well as reasons for the change. These findings suggest that while there may be some merit in the ‘depoliticisation of immigrants’ argument advanced by some scholars with respect to the role of ethinic organisations at the macro level, this may not be the case at the micro level. |
