Popis: Because the forest in North Rhine-Westphalia has such enormous ecological, economic and socio-cultural significance for this densely populated, most western German state, in October 2003 the state government and the University of Münster established the Centre for Forest Ecosystems. The forest centre houses two institutions: The Research Group for Forest Ecology,Forestry and Timber Utilization at the Institute for Landscape Ecology at the University of Münster and the International Institute for Forest Ecosystem Management and Timber Utilization North Rhine-Westphalia. Inquiries into the sustainable use of limited natural resources also require the analysis of historical developments. Studies in forest and woodland history are therefore an integral part of some projects carried out at the centre. The following describes some typical aspects of forest history, especially of the Ruhr district. These are facets of the history of urban forestry, the exploration of which is part of the recently launched project «Woodlands and society in the Ruhr district».
