In common with other naturally occurring forests, the maintenance and growth of jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Smith) forest is dependent on the plant species present, the stores of nutrients in soils and on the climate of the region. The predominant forest soils, described by Churchward and Dimmock (Chapter 2), have low nutrient contents. Therefore cycling and natural inputs of nutrients are particularly relevant. The marked seasonal variations in temperature and rainfall, described by Gentilli (Chapter 3), are characteristic of Mediterranean-type climates. These seasonal variations result in correspondingly marked seasonal patterns of biological activity, which in turn control nutrient cycling processes. An understanding of these processes is important for current and future management of the forest. |
