Popis: | Busoni was the progenitor of a stream of modernism notably absent from the master narrative of twentieth-century music. Varese and Wolpe, who were among his most important disciples, became mentors to many leading composers, especially in America. A comparison of their early careers, their contacts with Busoni, and their responses to the visual arts leads to a discussion of their association with the New York School of abstract expressionists and their deepening friendship. The essay explores the impact of Varese's Desert on Wolpe's Seven Pieces for Three Pianos, which he dedicated to Varese, and his Symphony No. 1. |
