Popis: | DAU, as this book tells us, is the name by which Lev Davidovich Landau wished to be addressed by all and sundry and I shall not go against his wishes. He died 22 years ago, but his career in theoretical physics ended six years before that in a car smash. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics that same year. Since chapter in this book gives a dramatic account of the fight, with world-wide support, for Dau's life, I will not retell the story here. Nor will I list his great scientific achievements, which, with a biographical sketch, form the first chapter of the book. A full collection of his scientific papers in English translation exists (Collected Papers by L D Landau, ed D ter Haar 1965 Pergamon), but I am not aware of (even a Russian) biography. |
