Ice buildup on the wings, fuselage and other parts on an aircraft continues to be a source of hazard in the aviation industry. Ice formed on the surface of external tanks of a space shuttle could also be a source of debris hazard at liftoff (C. E. Bassey and G. R. Simpson, IEEE Aerospace Conf. p.1–6, 2007). The development of technology to combat this problem has been ongoing, but much still needs to be done (NASA/TM — 2010-216226 NASA Report Series, 2010). The National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) and the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) databases reveal that between 2006 and 2010, 228 icing related accidents were recorded in the United Sates (P. Appiah-Kubi, 2011, MS Thesis, U. Tennessee). These accidents resulted in loss of lives and damage to flight equipment. |
