Popis: | Church Archaeology, 13, 53-38 The Cistercian abbey of Melrose was founded in 1136. It sustained damage during the English invasions of 1322, 1385, 1544 and 1545, and after the Reformation by stone robbers. The abbey is now in a ruinous state but enough of it survives to attest to the high quality of its architecture and sculptural works. Recent excavations in service trenches nearby revealed medieval architectural stones from the abbey, medieval and post-medieval walls and other features. |
