Popis: | Morphology, morphometry and growth rings of the otoliths sagitta, asteriscus and lapillus of Gerres cinereus from Colima and Jalisco coasts, Mexico were studied. Samples were obtained from the commercial catch from April 2010 to November 2011. Body side and sex related differences of the three pairs of otoliths were analyzed. In all cases it was observed that growth in otoliths is eccentric with respect to the core. Relations between total length of the fish and the length and width of the otolith showed that the size of these structures can be used to determine the age of fish. Seven growth rings were identified as a maximum number in the saggitae and the asterisci. Due to otolith thickness, these marks could not be seen in the lapilli. Male sagittae, asterisci and lapilli were bigger than female otoliths. |
