Popis: | This article identifies the principal musical traits of eastern Insulindia and investigates the extent to which these traits are also found in other parts of the archipelago. These traits include, among many others, an emphasis on vocal music (especially group singing) over instrumental music, singing in various polyphonic textures, the triple subdivision of beats, complex meters, and phrases of “irregular” length (not divisible by four). References are provided to audio and video recordings exemplifying each of the traits discussed. The conclusion is that few of the traits are totally unique to the eastern region, but (a) they are found in greater concentration in the eastern region than anywhere else in Insulindia, and (b) when found in Insulindia outside the eastern region, it is typically in regions where neither gamelan music nor Muslim music predominate. Two hypotheses are briefly formulated to explain these findings. |
