The solubility of plutonium(VI) carbonate in lithium acid carbonate

Popis: The solubility of PuO/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ in LiHCO/sub 3/ solutions was measured for LiHCO/sub 3/ concertrations of 0 to 0.94 M at 24 deg C. When the Pu and LiHCO/sub 3/ concentrations of the saturated solutions were plotted against each other on a log-log graph, the slope of the resulting straight line was 1.0, indicating that the solubtlity reaction is PuO/sub 2/CO/sub 3/(s) + LiHCO/sub 3/ (aq) yields LiPuO/sub 2/(CO/sub 3/)(HCO/sub 3/)(aq), with an equtlibriu m constant of 0.13. Saturated solutions of PuO/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ in LiHCO/sub 3/, equtlibrated with 1000 psi CO/sub 2/, were found to form light pink precipitates which quantitatively removed the Pu from the solutions.
