Transfer effects and retroactive inhibition (RI) under the A-B, A-C paradigm were compared where form-class similarity of the responses on List 1 and List 2 was factorially manipulated. The responses on the two lists were either adjectives (A) or letters (L) with form-class similarity being the same (A-A and L-L) or different (A-L and L-A). RI effects were reduced in the A-L and L-A treatments as measured by a modified free-recall (MFR) test or by an associative matching test. However, transfer effects were unrelated to form-class similarity suggesting that the magnitude of transfer and RI do not necessarily co-vary. In addition, RI effects in the A-B, C-D paradigm paralleled those found with the A-B, A-C paradigm. |
