Popis: Since ancient times, women have sought childbirth pain relief but, historically, they have been confronted first with ethical dilemmas and later with fear of the consequences on the delivery or the newborn. In the 1990s, concern has increased that childbirth pain relief could negatively impact breastfeeding initiation success, a worrying issue since breastfeeding is now considered the normative standard for infant feeding. Provided that newborn and mother should no longer be viewed as separate entities, breastfeeding initiation can be considered the coronation of a mutually successful dyadic interaction that strongly certifies the well-being of both mother and baby. More specifically, breastfeeding is a very complex, timely coordinated process implying the expression of full neurological competence of both the involved subjects. Therefore, objective, graduated measures of breastfeeding initiation success could be considered as effective, useful means to evaluate the dyadic safety of neuraxial labor analgesia administration throughout the childbirth process.
