Computer graphics has found many applications in various fields in recent years. Industrial Design is an important task in the development process of many manufactured products. However, in the opinion of the authors many CAD/CAM systems have ignored or left unsolved such problems of emotion and sensitivity which are the stock in trade of artistically based activities such as Industrial Design. This paper describes a part of the CAD/CAM system introduced at the Sharp Corporation which is designed to satisfy the needs of the Industrial Designer in the specific task of design and production of graphics for product design. The CAPGraph (Computer Aided Product Graphics)system contains in its data base words, logos, graphic symbols, patterns and forms of designers ‘know how’, such as the spacing of the graphic elements commonly used in product designs. The system allows the designer to create graphic designs interactively using a graphic display and tablet, and then outputs automatically the finished artwork in a camera ready form suitable for use as a master for various printing processes. |
