Displacement, especially in developing countries, is on the rise. But where do displaced persons seek shelter when fleeing from violence? Based on existing literature, we develop a framework to understand household-level destination choices during forced displacement in developing countries. Conditional on being a safe location, we argue that not only the ability to gain livelihoods matters. Forcibly displaced populations also care about embeddedness in social, cultural and relational networks when choosing their host communities. Additionally, they want to politically integrate into community life and demand agency. Empirically, we study the choice of refuge for internally displaced persons, refugees and host community members in the Kasai, DRC, with a conjoint experiment. The study contributes household level evidence on destination choices in developing contexts and speaks to the literature on the integration of displaced populations in host communities. This registration presents the study’s motivation and hypotheses. The survey instrument accompanies this document. |
