All the planned experiences which contribute to pupils’ learning and development in the context and ethos of a school are generally referred to as the school curriculum. To plan a physical education curriculum effectively, we need to understand the process of planning at three different levels: planning in the long term (schemes of work); planning in the medium term (units of work); and planning in the short term (lesson plans). Each school has physical education policies. The overarching policy is one that outlines the aims or long-term purposes of the subject in the school, along with the objectives or actions taken to achieve these aims: the scheme of work. The geographical location, structure, organisation and traditions of a school collectively contribute to its localised culture, as experienced by staff and pupils and this impacts on long-term planning. |
