Popis: Some modules of thin alumina gel membrane supported on the outer surface of a coarse porous ceramic cylinder were made to apply for continuous dehumidification of air. The principle of water vapour removal from the air flowing around the membrane is that the water vapour condenses in quite small pores of the membrane due to the capillary condensation and migrates through the membrane to its inner surface, where it evaporates due to the evacuation of the inside of the cylinder. As the heat of condensation generated on the outer surface can be used as the heat of evaporation just inside the thin membrane, dehumidification is to be done under nearly isothermal condition, which is preferable from the view point of energy conservation. Because of blocking of pores with liquid water a quite large separation ratio was obtained. The separation mechanism, separation ratio, dehumidification rate and feasibility of this kind of membrane as a practical dehumidifier are discussed on the basis of some experimental results.
