Median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (MSSEP) and brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) provide essential information to the clinician. A close relationship between evoked potential (EP) waveform and specific anatomic lesions could be demonstrated. Beside specificity and their ability to reveal conduction defects, exactly EPs are very resistant to alterations by anything other than structural pathology in the somatosensory pathway. Commonly used drugs in intensive care medicine and anesthesia (except volatile anesthetic agents) do not affect EPs [6]. Neurologic examination is often limited since the majority of these patients are noncompliant, having been pretreated with analgosedative drugs or in coma. |
