Popis: | A novel technique for melting high nitrogen glasses in a hot isostatic press is described. Melts were prepared in covered boron nitride crucibles at 1900°C and 30 ksi N2. Nitrogen contents, in equivalent per cent, ranged from 18% to 62% in increments of 11%. Fusion analysis revealed no losses of nitrogen from these melts. Devitrification and oxidation phenomena were studied by differential thermal analysis followed by X-ray diffraction of melt samples quenched from selected temperatures. The hardness and fracture toughness of the oxynitride glass increased with nitrogen content. |
