Summary The effect of two gestagen steroids, norethisterone acetate and norgestrel, on cartilage growth was investigated in immature albino rats of both sexes by means of the tibia test. Gestagens were administered orally, either alone or combined with ethinyl estradiol. The gestagens had no effect on the epiphysial cartilage of the females, while in the males a dose-dependent action was found. Ethinyl estradiol exerted a marked negative effect both on cartilage and on body weight. This effect is enhanced in the case of the gestagenethinyl estradiol combination. |
