Popis: A theoretical model for calculating the thermal IR radiation of different backgrounds was developed. The model framework consists of a system of steady-state energy budget equations describing the energy interaction which takes place within the underlying scene. Knowing the thermal characteristics and the driving meteorological variables, we established and solved the equation for the surface temperature. The model was applied to natural and man-made backgrounds over a diurnal cycle. Simulated surface temperatures of different backgrounds were compared with each other in the same environmental conditions, which show that the surface temperatures of artificial surfaces are well above that of natural surfaces. Between the natural surfaces, there is a distinct difference between vegetation and soil. To obtain a better model evaluation, the temperature-moisture coupling in the surface layer was considered.
