Neurogenic tumors account for approximately 10–12% of all benign soft tissue tumors and 7–8% of all malignant soft tissue tumors. These can be divided into neoplastic and pseudotumors. Neoplastic tumors include those derived from the Schwann cell (collectively referred to as “peripheral nerve sheath tumors” or PNSTs), such as neurilemoma, neurofibroma, and rare malignant counterparts. Another neurogenic tumor is the neural fibrolipoma. This is likely to be congenital in origin and presents as fibrofatty infiltration of the nerve, usually the median nerve at the wrist. Following trauma or surgery a neuroma may develop at the site of injury. Tumors may also develop from peripheral autonomic nerves; an example of this is the glomus tumor, commonly seen beneath the fingernail in women. |
