Popis: The puncturing technique, which is widely used for binary convolutional codes, is applied to Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM). Extensive computer searches have provided the best punctured TCM codes. The free Euclidean distance of most of these codes matches the distance of Ungerboeck's optimum codes. Since punctured codes are obtained from a low-rate code, decoding can be simplified at the expense of a small reduction in the coding gain. In addition to the decoding advantages, the rate of a punctured code can be easily changed and thus, variable bandwidth efficiency systems can be implemented with a single encoder/decoder.
