While I was in my doctoral training, we were discussing family dynamics and therapeutic interventions. An exacerbated student asked our professor how she is able to really see the family dynamics, be able to remain neutral, and not get “sucked into” the family dynamics. The professor stated that she likened her families to a puzzle, and it was her job to figure out the puzzle pieces. I remember thinking art therapy may provide an effective segue into the family puzzle. I have long felt that verbal therapy alone is limiting-those who hold the least power within the family system may not have a voice in the therapeutic setting; art balances the power differential inherent in families and provides all family member with a nonverbal “voice” through the art process. Therefore, art therapy is useful when clients do not have the language skills (e.g., young children), when the emotions are filled with so much tension it prohibits access through verbal means, or when family rules forbid discussion of feelings and conflicts. Likewise, Manicom & Boronska (2003) noted the art process provides an alternative channel for communication that might otherwise not be accessed, as the image allows for unconscious feelings or unknown family stories to surfaceRiley (1994) noted that art therapy products created by families in treatment are valuable as assessment tools, fresh modes of communication, and levers of change. Family art therapists who practice from a structural framework may find this approach expansive and successful with a breadth offamilies who seek therapy. They will likely observe families through their patterns of interaction, power structure, and so on. Ford Sori (1995) noted that in art therapy the structure of family may be assessed through the use of family drawings in two ways: through direct observation of family members as they work on a joint project, and by examining and discussing the artwork itself with the family. Both methods yield valuable information that forms the basis of the therapist’s hypothesis and treatment plans. |
