Popis: Four considerations in introducing com puters into secondary schools are (1) the cost, (2) the type of hardware, (3) the soft ware, and (4) the curriculum. Clearly the four are interdependent, although the na ture of their relationships has not been comprehensively articulated. Although cur ricular goals should perhaps be the starting point in educational planning of this kind, the present paper will focus on one attempt to coordinate software and hardware for an existing or predefined curriculum at a rea sonable cost. The province of Manitoba is located in the south central part of Canada. It is 638 500 square kilometers in area (i.e., ap proximately two and one-half times the size of Oregon) and has a population that slightly exceeds one million (i.e., approxi mately half the population of Oregon). The population in the province is distributed in such a way that about half resides in much smaller communities that are predomi nately located in the southern part of the province and whose populations are usu ally less than 25 000. As would be expected, the distribution of the student population parallels that of the total population. The result is that there are large schools with high enrollments in Winnipeg and a small number of students attending many schools in the rural areas.
