Trial excavation in the area immediately to the east of the castle at Middleton, Norfolk examined a small bailey ditch. This feature had been levelled, with pottery from its fills suggesting a twelfth century date. A fragment of post-in-trench structure was recorded within the northern part of the bailey. Trenching also examined a large double-ditched crop mark boundary feature, apparently sealed by the northern edge of the motte, but failed to clarify its date or function.
