We report the experimental results and theoretical modeling for the electronic energy level structure of Tb3+ in laser crystal LiYF4. Using polarized one- and two-photon spectroscopic methods, crystal field levels of the Tb3+ ion have been obtained from the ground multiplet up to 42 000 cm−1 and unambiguously identified. The observed spectra have been analyzed using an effective operator Hamiltonian. Free-ion and crystal field parameters were determined in non-linear least-squares fitting of the calculated energy states to 165 observed levels. Excellent correlation (rms=9.7 cm−1) was obtained between the experiments and the computed energy level structure. |
