Popis: Obesity is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Adiponectin is an adipocytederived hormone that is implicated in several metabolic pathways that may be relevant for the development for CVD. Several features make adiponectin an attractive marker for cardiovascular risk, including the ability to manipulate adiponectin levels through medication, lifestyle, and diet. This article provides an overview of the current understanding of adiponectin as an emerging risk factor for CVD. Although studies examining the association of adiponectin with cardiovascular end points and mortality have provided complex results, adiponectin holds promise as a potentially useful obesity marker to assess cardiovascular risk and to quantify the impact of measures to prevent CVD.
