During a past 11-year period we have encountered 37 patients with hematopoietic disease who underwent gastrointestinal surgery, of these 6 cases were operated upon for acute abdomen. Many of the patients suffering from peritonitis had indistinct complaints involving abdominal signs, difficulties in diagnosis and delay in time for starting operation after the onset of initial symptoms. Steroids had been administered in all of the patients, and anticancer drugs or immunosupressive agents, in some of them. Preoperative conditions were poor and bleeding tendencies, anemia, hypoprotenemia and malnutrition were noticed in these patients.Five of the 6 patients died within 42 days after surgery. In the treatment of gastrointestinal patient with hematopoietic disease, a careful caution of possible occurrence of acute abdomen, and if occurred, early diagnosis, emergency operation, and appropriate postoperative management may promise better prognosis. |
