Popis: The study was initiated by a request to feed 'volunteer' military services foods that are not only nutritious but acceptable. Specifically, beverages were singled out since they constitute products of processed fruit juices and fruit-flavored beverages of which are 100 different types at the marketplace. In order to clarify and attempt to reduce costs of military procurement this report lists beverages classified according to their product types, their range in cost per 6 fluid oz. serving, and other data that describe the produce such as its nutritional characteristics and the like. The study accordingly proceeded largely on the basis of a survey of over 100 different products offered by three representative supermarkets in the Greater Boston area. Data on product characteristics, available federal standards, nutritional aspects, flavor cost and additives were obtained for these items, which were classified into five distinct groups: fresh juices, frozen concentrates, canned and bottled beverages, beverage base powders and liquid beverage base concentrates.
