A brief history is given of the Redlich-Kwong equation of state, from the original version of 1948 to the modification by this author, the first to be used for practical purposes, to the present versions, which have extended its use to strongly non-ideal systems. Its original predictive character is partly maintained, by the use of proper mixing rules and group contributions (Vidai, Tochigi, Fredenslund) or by using UNIFAC to define the parameter mixing rules (Michelsen). Some work remains to be done to improve the treatment of heavy compounds and predict their parameters from available properties. |
