Dysfunction in the synchrony between hypothalamus, pituitary, ovaries and uterus can lead to abnormalities in the menstrual cycle, ranging from an absence of menstrual flow (amenorrhea) to cycles of abnormal duration, frequency or pattern (abnormal uterine bleeding, AUB). Impaired nutritional status and infectious diseases make amenorrhea and AUB more common in developing nations. The consequences of these issues can range from social isolation and impairment of educational opportunities to loss of fertility and worsening of anaemia. Additionally, both amenorrhea and AUB can be indicators of general health issues. In this chapter, we review the common causes and approach to the evaluation and management of patients presenting with such disorders of the menstrual cycle. |
