The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has requested archaeological monitoring and sampling services during construction of housekeeping facilities (BFMV 955000) at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS), Ko'olaupoko District, Waimanalo, Oahu Island. The archaeological monitoring program was in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended. The intention of archaeological monitoring and sampling was to determine if cultural resources are present in the project area, to assess the nature and chronology of any features/sites identified, to ensure the collection of sufficient archaeological materials, and to assess the significance of identified resources. One archaeological site - Site 50-80-15-4857 - is in the vicinity of the project area and is considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). BAFS is located on the windward coast of the Island of O'ahu, District of Ko'olaupoko, ahupua'a of Waimanalo, TMK 01-04-01:15. The proposed housekeeping facilities are located in the Waimanalo Plain in the northern portion of BAFS. |
