Popis: A study was performed to investigate and identify heliostat cost reductions that would result from modifications to the Sandia Second Generation Heliostat Specification. A parametric analysis of specification requirements and cost benefits was done by determining the effectiveness of the change in terms of heliostat field cost per unit intercepted annual energy on the receiver. The study considered the areas of reduced operational wind requirements, effects of heliostat beam pointing the beam quality requirements, operational range temperature effects, survival wind requirements and criteria, aspect ratio effects, and slew rates. Also considered were the effects of mixing two heliostats with different performance levels in the 50 MWe field and a damage/cost estimate for survival of the baseline heliostat to higher wind loads than the specification. An investigation and analysis of the safety issues associated with beam control during normal heliostat operating and stow conditions was performed using analytical equations for both single and multiple heliostats. Effort in this area was directed toward determining feasibility and implementation methods for safe face-up stow strategies. (LEW)
