What are intentions and intentional actions?

Autor: Elisabeth Parés-Pujolràs, Patrick Haggard
Rok vydání: 2022
Popis: This chapter discusses the neural mechanisms that underlie the human capacity for intentional action. In particular, it highlights the hierarchical nature of the brain areas involved in action selection and notes its structural similarity with some philosophical accounts of intention. It further discusses the interaction between higher-order areas containing more abstract representations, and lower-level decision-making processes leading to detailed specification of motor action. These interactions may contribute to understanding of intentional control of action in the human brain that is both philosophically relevant and also causally effective. Further, the chapter discusses how the neural basis of the subjective aspects of intentional action can be investigated in an empirically tractable way.
