Cd0.96Zn0.04Te was directionally solidified by the gradient freeze technique in a furnace mounted on Clarkson’s centrifuge, at accelerations of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 times earth’s gravity g. The concentration of tellurium inclusions decreased markedly with increasing acceleration during solidification. The polycrystallinity of the initial portion of the ingots increased as the acceleration during solidification was increased from 3 g to 5 g. The maximum grain size and minimum infrared transmission were at 2 g. The dislocation density was unaffected by centrifugation. The axial concentration profile of zinc appears to have been unaffected by centrifugation, although the scatter in the data is large. The radial variation in zinc concentration was a maximum at 2 g and increased down the ingot. |
