Publisher Summary This chapter describes the isolation and properties of di- and tri-galacturonic acids and of Δ 4,5 -di - and trigalacturonic acids. Conditions for enzymatic digestions and for isolation of oligomers are provided, along with pertinent analytical and biological data. The mechanism of action of the small oligouronides for activating proteinase inhibitor genes in leaves is not known, but the cell wall-derived oligouronides are thought to be among the earliest signals produced at wound sites to set in motion this defensive response against attacking predators. The biological activity of the four oligomers in inducing the synthesis of proteinase Inhibitor I in leaves of excised young tomato plants was assayed by supplying the leaves with solutions of the oligomers through the cut petioles for 30 min are described in this chapter. |
