SUMMARY Agroforestry is of paramount importance in the Indian arid zone. Besides providing food, fodder, fuel, timber and several other products of day to day use, agroforestry offers security to inhabitants and their animals during famines and droughts, which are quite frequent in this region. Agriculture by itself would not be a stable enterprise in this famine prone, fragile, arid region ecosystem. Forestry with agriculture provides support to the farming system by way of conferring stability and generating assured income. In addition to this social and economic role, the utility of agroforestry practices and their symbiotic effects on better growth and yield of the crops is widely recognised. Agroforestry as subject of scientific investigation has assumed wider recognition in view of the need to maximise production on the basis of sustainable land management. |
