Popis: | An estimate of the relative importance of the unimolecular and bimolecular processes in hydrogen formation was secured by radiolysis of biphenyl and deuterated biphenyls in the solid phase. Solid biphenyl samples of 8-10 g size were irradiated to a total dose of about 4 x 1021 ev/g. The sharp drop in hydrogen yield which accompanied the phase change suggested that the processes responsible for the production of hydrogen in the radiolysis of biphenyl were severely hampered by immobilization of biphenyl molecules in a solid matrix. The possibility that the HD formed from the solid mixture of biphenyl and biphenyl-d10 might have resulted from the secondary reactions of some active species freed during the melting process was eliminated by the observation that the isotopic composition of the hydrogen was the same for the hydrogen obtained by sublimation or by melting of the irradiated biphenyls. |
