Popis: | OBJECTIVE: To ascertain if simultaneous bilateral implantation is a justified elective procedure. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of case notes of all the patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral intraocular lens implantation with a follow-up of at least 2 months. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Southport & Formby District General Hospital and the private practice of the first author. PATIENTS: One hundred patients were identified. Bilateral posterior chamber implant (61%) and posterior chamber implant in one eye and secondary anterior chamber implant in the other (25%) were the commonest cases. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual acuity and complications. RESULTS: 83%, of the eyes achieved a visual acuity of at least 6/12. Posterior capsule rupture occurred in two eyes (2%) and endophthalmitis in another two eyes (2%); none of these incidents was bilateral. The only bilateral event was iris prolapse, and this was thought to be related to general anaesthesia. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous bilateral implant surgery may be offered routinely to patients with the precautions explained in the paper. |
