Popis: | Mice vaccinated by intramuscular doses of Coccidioides immitis spherules (formalin-killed) acquired strong immunity to otherwise lethal infections produced by the intranasal instillation of arthrospores. However, comparable doses of vaccine given intravenously induced only weak immunity. Associated immunologic responses of delayed dermal hypersensitivity, restricted fungal proliferation in vivo, the magnitude of the inflammatory cell reaction, and the susceptibility of leukocytes to undergo lysis in the presence of blood and coccidioidal antigens were very weak in intravenously-treated mice but strong in those that had been immunized by the intramuscular route. The findings emphasize the importance of the vaccinating route in assessing immunogenicity in the Coccidioides-mouse model. |
