Breast cancer (BC) is a menace in females across the globe triggering burden on the health care system in developed and developing nations. BC has shown resistance to conventional therapies like radiation, hormonal and chemotherapy. The current challenge is to develop novel, cost effective and highly sensitive treatment method. Biochemically, active compounds extracted from plants have shown a potential role in reducing the risk of cancer metastasis. Several phytochemicals are known to regulate metabolic processes like apoptosis activation, cell cycle regulation, metastatic suppression and angiogenesis. This chapter highlights various phytochemicals and their mechanism of action in reducing the risk of breast cancer. Furthermore, the chapter deals with the pharmaceutical compounding of the phytochemicals and the potential phytochemicals that have entered the various stages of clinical trials for BC management. Conclusively the drawbacks, challenges and future prospective of the phytochemicals have been discussed. |
