Popis: | Computer‐controlled systems are commonplace in the modern world and many of them are used for controlling safety‐related functions. Such applications of software‐based systems create a number of ethical and legal problems in the event of failure giving rise to dangerous situations. The issue of the competence of the practitioner involved in writing software for safety‐related applications is discussed from a legal perspective at a time when the software industry is concerned to ensure that an appropriate level of professional competence is achieved by the practitioners involved. The existing case law relating to professional negligence is examined and, by using examples such as that of the London Ambulance service incident parallels are drawn with the emergent profession of software engineer. |
