The advantages of this small book are fairly and exactly mentioned by Dr. Sci. A.I. Kafanov in the Introduction, and I perfectly agree with his appreciation of the textbook Herbarium of Marine Algae from both the scientific and methodological points of view. V.F. Przhemenetskaya’s book represents a beautiful combination of scientific reliability and simplicity and ease in the presentation of the materials and, therefore, might be used as an excellent manual indispensable to students of biological faculties specializing in marine botany. It provides brief characteristics of the structure of algae, their reproduction, origin, and distribution and also describes the specific features of all three phyla of macrophytes, Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta, and Rhodophyta. Moreover, the book includes a review of papers on the world’s largest collections of these plants, a practical guide for making collections and treatment of phycological materials, and a dictionary of phycological terms. This extensive information is comprised in the book’s small volume (100 pages), which might be characterized tritely, but fairly as a “very, very opportune book!” |
