Popis: The preceding discussion indicates the value of the erythrocyte as a simple biological system in studying biophysical and biochemical aspects of freezing injury and protection. A beginning has been made toward an understanding of the mechanisms of action of cryoprotective compounds. Observations and concepts have been described which may lead toward a more generalized interpretation of freezing injury. Cryobiologists should strive to find similarities among their different systems and freezing phenomena rather than to compartmentalize their observations. Only then can basic cryobiology become more than a descriptive science and applied cryobiology more than design by empiricism.
