Summary Goeschl et al. (1967) have observed that the intact shoot of etiolated pea seedlings evolved most ethylene from the plumula and the hook. The present study confirms this and attributes it primarily to basipetal gradients of the activity of the ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) and of ACC production. Ethylene exerts an inhibition of its own synthesis via suppression of ACC synthesis (Rohwer and Schierle, 1984) and a stimulation of the in vivo activity of the ethylene forming enzyme. Apparently, both mechanisms operate all along the shoot. The enhancement of EFE activity by ethylene was inhibited by cycloheximide, indicating an involvement of protein synthesis. |
